Review: Witch and Wizard by James Patterson

The world is changing - the government has seized control of every aspect of society, and now kids are disappearing. For fifteen-year-old Wisty and her older brother Whit, life turns upside-down when they are hauled out of bed one night, separated from their parents, and thrown into a secret compound for no reason they can comprehend. The new government is clearly trying to suppress Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Being a Normal Teenager. Imprisoned together and condemned to death, Wisty and Whit begin exhibiting strange abilities and powers they never dreamed of. Maybe there is a reason they were singled out. Can this newly discovered witch and a wizard master their skills in time to save themselves, their parents - and maybe the world? (From Amazon.co.uk)

When I started Witch and Wizard I wasn't sure that I was going to like or hate it. This maybe because I had read so many diverse reviews, the most memorable probably being Becky @ The Bookette's and Jenny @ Wondrous Read's reviews. Maximum Ride is one of my favourite books so I thought that I would give it a try anyway. However, I enjoyed this book a lot. It wasn't very well written, but if the books exciting enough (which it was b) then it hardly ever irritates me. James Patterson sure can write exciting, fast paced stories well.

The idea in Witch and Wizard are pretty original, I haven't read a book about witches and wizards since well...a while. I like all the elements that he used and enjoyed seeing something different to the other wizard books I read a long time ago. The whole N.O thing, the rebels, the prophecy, it was mix of a dystopian and fantasy, which in my opinion is a winner.

Whit and Wisty were believable and relatable characters, there were antics amusing. (On a side note, some of my friends say that James Patterson doesnt get the teens voice right, not enough emotian, which I don't agree with, but hey, they are twihards...) The rebels and half lights were great characters, my favourites had to be Sasha and Janine. I am crossing my fingers that Sasha and Wisty get together, but it probably won't happen.

The ending was a cliffhanger (why is there so many cliffghangers? Its one of the few things that annoy me about books) and I have not heard about a sequel. I'm desperate here! Anyway, if you don't mind cheesiness or unexceptionaray writing or if you just want something fun that will keep you on the edge of you seat, then read this.

Happy New Year!

  2. I think this is the first positive review I have read for this book. I started flipping through it at the bookstore and found it to be rather interesting. So I looked at some reviews online and found them to be disappointing. So I placed the book back on the shelf. This review makes me want to pick it back up. Thanks! :)

  3. Yes indeed. All very valid points. What you call a cliffhanger, I call unfinished but it boils down to the same thing. We both want to read the next book. Thanks for mentioning my review, it was a sweet surprise. I'm wondering if you prefer Maximumum Ride or Witch and Wizard? I'm a Maximum Ride girl through and through.

  4. Maximum Ride, definately. There was lack of Fang-like characters in witch and wizard.
